Vaccination

Kitten and puppy

Regular vaccinations are essential to protect your pet against the major infectious diseases.

We recommend that cats are vaccinated against ‘flu, enteritis and leukaemia, dogs against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis and rabbits against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. Dogs may need an additional vaccination against ‘kennel cough’ to protect them whilst at boarding kennels, training classes or shows.

Fortunately the incidence of these diseases has been reduced in recent years, but they have not been eradicated and few specific treatments are available. Thus, vaccination is the only reliable method of protection.

Puppies usually start the vaccination course at 8 weeks of age, kittens at 9 weeks and rabbits at 6 weeks. Our vaccination service includes a health assessment and the opportunity for you to ask questions on any aspect of caring for your pet. The fee also includes an ‘adolescent’ health check with one of our qualified nurses which will be carried out when your pet reaches 5-6 months of age.

Annual booster vaccinations are required to maintain your pet’s immunity to the infectious diseases and a health assessment will be carried out at the same time. You will receive a checklist on which to indicate any topics you wish to discuss with the veterinary surgeon.
